A Pilot Study on the Health Availability at Skiing and Snowboarding in Korea

Abstract
Head trauma is the leading cause of death in fatalities related to skiing and snowboarding. In most instances, a helmet was not utilized by any of the fatality victims. These findings suggest that helmet use would be effective in preventing traumatic brain injury. Helmets are effective device for preventing the risk of head and brain trauma from skiing and snowboarding. This study was tried to evaluate the availability and status of helmet rental to skiers and snowboarders in ski resort. This survey was conducted by internet searching homepage of resorts and telephone interview with the manager about rent equipment services during 2003-2004 skiing season. Surveys were telephone interviewed by the 12 resorts. Ten of 12 responding ski resorts were analyzed as final data. One of 10 ski resort rented helmet rental for children when parents request only. Currently, helmets were not considered as part of the standard rental package by any of the resorts. Helmets rental has been increasing in popularity. Helmet use will be encourage, helmet has not yet become generally accepted. Prevention programs are best targeted at safe skiing and snowboarding practice, use of helmets for skiers in children especially.
